## Query
What are the current best practices for SEO title tags and meta descriptions, with explicit separation between EN sites (Google) and RU sites (Yandex + Google)?

## Options (sources)

### 1. Google Search Central — official documentation
- `https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/title-link` (Title links)
- `https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/snippet` (Meta descriptions / snippets)
- Authoritative for EN. Google deliberately publishes **no fixed character or pixel limit** — the entire industry then guesses "60 / 160".

### 2. Yandex Webmaster — official documentation
- `https://yandex.ru/support/webmaster/ru/search-results/title.html`
- `https://yandex.ru/support/webmaster/ru/indexing-options/description.html`
- Authoritative for RU. Yandex also publishes **no fixed character limit** — describes length as "bounded by screen width".

### 3. Yandex Education — extended description guide
- `https://yandex.ru/adv/edu/materials/meta-tag-description-seo`
- Practical how-to with examples of good/bad descriptions, common mistakes in tabular form, and CTR-oriented writing patterns ("problem → solution → USP").

### 4. Search Engine Land — Title Tags SEO Guide
- `https://searchengineland.com/guide/title-tag`
- Largest EN SEO portal. Regularly updated, includes CTR benchmarks from title rewrites.

### 5. Detailed.com / Team Lewis / SEO.com — EN industry guides
- Run correlation studies on length, brand position, emoji, numerals vs CTR.
- Editorial opinion, not primary source.

### 6. RU agencies (Rookee, Serpstat, KOKOC, Semantica, Seowizard, PromoPult, Unisender, Remarketing, Mintclickseo, Analito)
- Measure actual title/description lengths in live Yandex and Google SERPs for RU sites; publish concrete character counts.
- Numbers disagree between sources (50-80 / 140-300) — no single "truth".

## Trade-offs / Comparisons

### EN sites (Google) — what the sources say

**`<title>`**
- Google officially sets **no maximum length** in characters or pixels. Title can be technically infinite; truncated by screen width.
- Industry working consensus: **50-60 characters** fully visible on desktop, ~70 with margin.
- Mandatory Google rules:
  - unique, descriptive, accurate, concise;
  - matches page content (otherwise Google rewrites it);
  - no keyword stuffing, no synonym repeats;
  - no boilerplate headings ("Home", "Profile");
  - brand name short, at start or end, separated by `:` / `—` / `|`;
  - title language = page language;
  - keep freshness (dates, seasons, prices for pages where they matter).
- Sources: Google Search Central (title-link), Search Engine Land, Detailed.com.

**`<meta name="description">`**
- Google officially sets **no maximum length**. Truncated by screen width.
- Industry working consensus:
  - **~150-160 characters** on desktop;
  - **~120-130 characters** on mobile (≈ 680 px);
  - **≤ ~920 px** width for desktop snippet.
- Mandatory Google rules:
  - unique, relevant, accurate page summary;
  - must not duplicate the title;
  - no comma-separated keyword lists;
  - programmatic generation is allowed and recommended for large sites, based on page data;
  - **Google does not guarantee** it will use your description in the snippet — it may pull a page fragment if that better answers the query;
  - structured descriptions with facts (author, price, date, attribute, age rating) work well.
- Sources: Google Search Central (snippet), on-page.ai, Stan Ventures, SERP Boosted, TypeCount.

### RU sites (Yandex) — what the sources say

**`<title>`**
- Yandex officially sets **no fixed character length**. Bounded by screen width.
- Industry working consensus:
  - **55-70 characters** optimal;
  - visible in Yandex SERP ~ **45-55 characters** (PromoPult, Mintclickseo, Dirbix);
  - Google displays slightly more: up to ~58 characters (Osminog).
- Mandatory Yandex rules:
  - informative, not generic ("Главная", "Контакты" — bad);
  - not too long (will be truncated);
  - minimum keywords, no repeats (otherwise Yandex flags as spam);
  - **minimum boilerplate titles** — Yandex explicitly criticizes patterns like `<Product name> — описание, цены, характеристики, фото, отзывы`;
  - add brand, separated by `:` / `—` / `|`;
  - keep data current (Yandex reports duplicates and stale titles in Webmaster → Diagnostics).
- Sources: Yandex Webmaster (title), PromoPult, Semantica, Rookee, Analito.

**`<meta name="description">`**
- Yandex officially sets **no fixed length**. Bounded by screen width.
- Industry working consensus:
  - **140-180 characters** for full Yandex visibility (PromoPult, KOKOC, Dirbix, Serpstat);
  - up to **300 characters** as a buffer, so Yandex can pick a query-relevant fragment for different searches;
  - practical split: Google 150-160, Yandex 160-170 (KOKOC).
- Mandatory Yandex rules:
  - **unique** per page (boilerplate/similar ones won't be shown);
  - **reflects page content**;
  - no keyword stuffing, no ALL CAPS, no ad slogans;
  - **prioritize important pages** (home, catalogs, commercial cards);
  - **useful facts**: price, color, delivery city, attributes;
  - **language = page language**;
  - **must not duplicate the title**;
  - Yandex **does not guarantee** it will use the description in the snippet — the snippet is formed from the most query-relevant fragment.

### Key differences RU vs EN

| Axis | EN / Google | RU / Yandex |
|---|---|---|
| Official position | No fixed character/pixel limit | No fixed character/pixel limit |
| Working title length | 50-60 chars (desktop) | 55-70 chars (Yandex trims harder on mobile) |
| Working description length | 150-160 chars | 160-180 chars (up to 300 as buffer) |
| Specifically criticized | Keyword stuffing, boilerplate titles, non-unique descriptions | Keyword stuffing, boilerplate `<product> — описание, цены…` titles, ALL CAPS, ad slogans |
| Snippet guarantee | Not guaranteed — pulls from content if more relevant | Not guaranteed — snippet formed per query |
| Mobile behavior | Tighter cut, ~120-130 chars description | Similar, mobile cuts more |
| Brand placement | Short, at start or end | Same, but Yandex examples more often put brand **at the end** |
| Programmatic description generation | Allowed and recommended for large sites | Same — Yandex recommends templates from product DB fields |
| Duplicate handling | Uniqueness mandatory | Uniqueness mandatory, flagged in Webmaster |

## Recommendation

**No single fixed limit — both Google and Yandex deliberately do not set one.** For production defaults, use:

**`<title>` — universal safe range:**
- **EN: 50-60 characters** (with margin up to 70).
- **RU: 55-70 characters** (Yandex truncates harder than Google, especially on mobile).
- Formula: `[Primary keyword] — [USP/modifier] | [Brand]`. Put brand at the end so it does not eat the visible area under the primary keyword.
- No duplicate titles across pages, no keyword stuffing, keep dates current.

**`<meta name="description">` — universal safe range:**
- **EN: 150-160 characters** (mobile shorter, ~120-130).
- **RU: 160-180 characters**, but writing up to **300 characters** is fine as a buffer — Yandex will pick a query-relevant fragment.
- Structure: `[Benefit/fact 1] · [Benefit/fact 2] · [CTA or refinement]`. No ALL CAPS, no ad slogans, no comma-separated keyword lists.
- Must **complement** the title, not duplicate it.
- Exactly one `<meta name="description">` per page, inside `<head>`.

**Additional for RU (Yandex):**
- Monitor Webmaster → Diagnostics → "Нет метатега", "Дублирование заголовков/описаний" — Yandex reports problems directly.
- Yandex officially criticizes boilerplate titles like `<Product name> — описание, цены, характеристики, фото, отзывы` → better to substitute only the blocks whose content actually exists on the page.

**Additional for EN (Google):**
- Use `max-snippet:[number]` and `data-nosnippet` for surgical snippet control.
- Structured data + useful facts in description (price, author, rating) raise the chance Google shows your exact text.

## Unknowns / Risks

- **Character counts are industry consensus, not search engine rules.** Google and Yandex deliberately do not publish hard limits; everything you see as "title = 60, description = 160" is empirics based on pixel width. Wide characters (W, M) eat more space; Cyrillic is usually wider per character than Latin, so RU texts of the same semantic density may hit the truncation wall sooner.
- **Search engines may rewrite your title/description per query.** Both Google and Yandex reserve the right to form the snippet from page content if it answers the user better. Do not rely on "hard" control over SERP appearance.
- **Length changes by device.** Mobile cuts harder; AMP results and rich snippets behave differently; voice search and featured snippets have their own rules.
- **Effect of description optimization on ranking is indirect.** Yandex states explicitly: description does not affect rankings directly, only CTR and behavior. Google — same.
- **No independent RU-only benchmarks.** Most RU sources (Rookee, KOKOC, PromoPult, Unisender, Semantica, Serpstat, Seowizard) are commercial agency blogs; their numbers diverge (140-300 for description). Treat as guidance, not truth.
- **Behavior of Google generative snippets (SGE / AI Overviews) not verified live.** As of July 2026, the AI summary may not display the classic description at all. This changes CTR-optimization rules.
